A More Equal Ireland | Marriage Referendum

A week ago today, I woke up to a fairer, more accepting and a more equal Ireland. The Marriage Referendum has been hot topic this year, debates have been exhausted, people's lives dissected in front of us, the ins and outs of parenting thrashed out. The bottom line? It passed. Not only did it pass, but we saw a surge of turnout, particularly with young people. Ordinary Joe-Soaps with no defined political backgrounds came out in force to campaign. Our little island is the first country to vote in favour of same-sex marriage in a democratic majority. After everything has been said and done, there is a lot to be proud about.

I have noticed though, the people I connect with regularly on social media and other bloggers themselves have been relatively quiet on all of this. Are they afraid? Who knows - but all I can put forward are my own views. I could have come here and spat out facts and figures, but I decided against it and instead to keep it simple.

You don't have to be a member of the LGBT community to recognise how much it means to them. If you saw some of the images and clips from last Saturday you can see yourself this handing-over of a basic human right we are all entitled to, means everything. Their smiles and joy were infectious and collectively, it showed that if we all rally together - there are no boundaries to what can be achieved.

Why do I care so much? I care about rights, I care about the people around me reaching the ultimate capacity of happiness, I care about same-sex couples I know myself and their children being protected, I care about my loved-ones no longer feeling inadequate, I care about people.

The one thing that got to me over the last few months when I sat around and thought about it was, as a straight young woman - as soon as I turned 18 in July, I could technically get married to any young fella that gave a second glance. (The chances of this actually happening is fairly minute, I think we would all agree).This is purely down to the fact that I would have had more rights. It made me sick, to think I was more entitled than some of the people I know. It didn't sit well with me at all. But as we can all see now, times are (finally) changing, the divisions are dispersing, and all the while embracing love as we know it in a unified movement.

I have a feeling, that this is only the beginning. I believe that this referendum has brought a litany of people and communities together, stronger. Can you see how much can be got out and sought when we co-operate with one another? There are many other minority groups that need a helping hand right now, and if we can do what we did on May 22nd, who knows how many more lives can be improved? The sky is the limit, and the souls that have been ignited for a greater cause should not be put out just yet.

Tips on | Getting Over the Flu | #IRISHBLOGCOLLAB



This week's post for #IrishBlogCollab is all about us ladies writing about something we feel we have something to offer. There has been a surprising influx of people I know coming down with coughs and colds, myself included recently - so I am here to prick your ideas on what to do next time! I am no medical professional (let's get the Leaving Cert over with first), but I do have experience from this that and the other so hopefully it'll come in handy.

REST UP, YOU ARE NOT SUPERHUMAN
Well, some people seem to be, but we're not. When you're sick, you're sick - and there's not much you can do about it. Down tools, get as much sleep as you can and keep warm. If you keep going around the clock like nobody's business your body will go into overdrive. And what happen's then? You get a relapse. You need to give your system time to recover and get strong again. You would think this tip is a given, but you would be surprised at the amount of people who just keep going going going. Mind yourself.

That crazy weekend you were planning to have down Wexford with the gang? Yeah probably not a good idea.

DRINK PLENTY
Even if it's cups of tea, flat 7Up, hot lemon water (which has a litany of benefits if you throw it up on Google) whatever. You NEED to flush the toxins out.

PARACETAMOL EVERY 4-6 HOURS (AS YOU NEED IT)
I do exercise caution with this one - make sure you are taking the correct dose and all of that jazz. This doesn't work for everyone, but it does for many and it does with me. I find it great to help with temperatures, headaches and general aches and pains. But don't be poppin' pills on an empty stomach. If you don't feel like eating a horse of a meal, even a yoghurt or a glass of milk beforehand will help to line the stomach. I've been there, done that.

SORE THROAT?
Just like your Granny used to say, gargle warm water with salt. Certain lozenges and sprays are great too. Chicken soup has anti-inflammatory properties and a spoon of manuka honey will do wonders.

ARE YOU A SINUS SUFFERER?
I feel you on this one, it's a toughie. The only thing I can say is please pay heed to your GP, if he/she says to take X spray, you take it. Even if you don't suffer badly with sinuses, you can still get a blocked nose. I recommend taking Otrivine, an over the counter nasal spray (they do children and adult versions, also with menthol, or menthol free). Sudafed is another good product. At this stage in the game you probably know what works best with you. Bare in mind that if nasal sprays contain steroids, it's said by some to avoid taking them for more than a two week period. Your GP will be able to best advise you on that one.

A tip for night; use an extra pillow under your head, it's magic, really.

STEAM STEAM STEAM
An old trick in many Irish households; get a bowl of hot water, a towel - put your snout near the water and the towel over your head. It'll help to open up the airways both with your cough, and your nose. A hot bath will fulfill the same principal, as well as easing muscle tension. Some others say a quick cold shower will help with a temperature, too.

STILL NOT FEELING 100%?
A lot of people will say "Oh sure if it's a viral thing, the GP won't give you anything." You know best how you feel. There is no harm in being sure to be sure. If you are prescribed anything you had better make sure you carry through the duration of the medication, as again - a relapse can be on the cards otherwise.

Another week, another #IrishBlogCollab post! You may have noticed that I have been absent from the blogging sphere lately, stress, school work and the joys of living caught up with me so I had to chillax-the-cax and look get it all under control.
